John Smith grain merchant
I am a citizen of the United States, and a permanent resident of New York. My name is John Smith, and I am in the grain business. I was born in that city, in the year 1840, and am consequently thirty-five years of age. The name of my family is legion; we number in all some thousands of persons, who inhabit the greater part of the sea-coast of New England, and the shores of the Middle States, as far south as Virginia. I am a plain man, and was brought up to trade. I like the life of a merchant, and intend to follow it all the days of my life.
John Smith describes his New York grain business and large extended family along the eastern seaboard.
