Humanity's animal helper

I am an animal of the class Mammary, and order Bimana, in which we term Man. I was originally designed to live on earth, and was composed by the Almighty to co-operate with man in cultivating and improving the planet. I was first created to assist in plucking up roots, and was afterwards raised to pluck fruits. I was next employed to gather the harvest of grain, and finally was permitted to pluck the ears of grain for myself. I have two distinct species of my class, one termed a savage, the other a civilised animal. The savage has a wild and uncultivated territory, denominated a forest, whereon he resides; the civilised animal has a cultivated region, denominated a plain, whereon he resides. The former has a limited range of fourteen thousand, the latter a more
