I am a person of no importance. I am a private individual, of no note or consequence in the world. I am neither a statesman nor a soldier, nor a man of learning, nor a person of peculiar genius. I simply walk about and see what others are doing, and hear what is said among them, and then go home and write a part of it all down in a book. I am a reporter of other men’s doings and sayings, a chronicler of life, a spectator of the great drama of human existence.
