Explanation of identity question
FThis question was first used in an interrogative form, and has been so used ever since. The person to whom it is applied, answers, "I am an Englishman." Then the question is changed to an affirmative form, and the person is said to be an Englishman. The question is applied to a person of any country, and the answer is always given in the language of that country. The question is applied to a person of either sex, and the answer is given in the masculine form.
The reply explains how questions about nationality are answered rather than identifying the speaker.
