Queen’s public servant
I am in the service of the Queen, and in the pay of the country. In the daytime I am in the Park, and in the night in the street. I am to be found in the square, in the street, and in the alley, in the fields, and in the gardens, in the country, and in the town. I am always in the way, and yet in the line of duty. I am sometimes in the way of good, and sometimes in the way of evil. I am in the way of honesty, and in the way of dishonesty. I am in the way of truth, and in the way of falsehood. In short, I am in the way of all the world, and all the world is in the way of me.
The speaker describes serving the Queen and country, present in streets and public places, in a paradoxical account of duty.
