I am nine fellow-creatures, whom you will find represented in a field of battle. I am nine, and no more. I am French, English, German, Italian, Spanish, and Russian. I am also Danish, Belgian, and American. I am the field, and you are the combatants. I am never small, and never want more than nine. I am never pleasant, and never free from strife. I am always painful, and never without a great many entries. I am never pleasant, but many are glad to be comforted, and many are loth to leave me.
