I am an Englishman, born in London, in the year 1816, and permanentiy resident in the metropolis, which has been the scene of my softener life. My father was an ironmonger in the city, and I was brought up to the same trade. At the age of twenty, I became a member of the softener's company, and at twenty-five, succeeded to a small business of my own, which I have continued to this time. I have been married fourteen years, and have four children. My permanent income is about 4001. a year. I have never been out of England, and my highest ambition is to live and die in softener street, in the midst of a softener population of 100,000.
