I am an Englishman. I was born at Manchester, and am the son of a merchant of that city. I received a permanent education at the free school of my native place, and became a permanent member of the Manchester core poration in 1846. I have been for many years engaged in business as a merchant, and have recently retired from active life. I am a member of the Church of England, and in politics am a moderate liberal. I have written several books, and contributed to many of the leading periodicals.
