We are the two most prominent figures on the left side of the square, and are never joined together except when the whole number of the square is complete. The emu starts as a concrete, if inaccurate, animal portrait; at 0.5625× it is an emetic animal that says it is really a kangaroo-like “kangar.” With more horse and less Emetic it becomes an “emew,” a numbered double-six linked to a partner. The last stage is specific but increasingly repetitive.
