I am a soft iron bar, which has been rendered magnetic by being kept for some time in the immediate neighbourhood of a powerful horseshoe magnet. I was first rendered soft and laminated, by being passed between the teeth of a large steel comb; and I was afterwards kept for some hours in a vertical position, between the two soft iron keepers of the horseshoe magnet, which you see me now. I am now a permanent magnet, and have acquired the power of keeping a keeper of my own kind of iron always sticking to me, so long as I continue to be myself. Keep me in this position, and you will see that the keeper will remain attached to me, so long as I continue to be a magnet; but let me once be demagnetized, and the keeper will fall
