I am a soft iron bar, which has been rendered magnetic by being kept for some time in the immediate neighbourhood of a powerful horseshoe magnet. I was first a part of the core of a soft iron keeper, which was applied to the pole of the horseshoe, and I have been so long in that position, that I have acquired strong magnetic polarity. I can now, like the horseshoe itself, lift a keeper of my own kind, and I can also lift a keeper of the same kind, but not one of a different kind. I can keep a permanent magnetic character, so long as I continue to be surrounded by a powerful horseshoe; but, when I am removed from the influence of the latter, that character immediately ceases to be manifested.
