Soldier who fights for pay + Laughing gas
Gas-dazed hired laugher
I feel pretty well, thank you. I am not ill, but I am not quite myself; I am somewhat tired. I have been laughing gas, and have been laughing too much. I have also been laughing at some people, and that does not quite agree with me. I am, therefore, in a state of mental exhilaration, which leaves me feebler than it found me. I shall be better to-morrow. I am like a hired laugher, who must laugh when he is bid, and can laugh no more than he is bid. I am, in plain terms, a hired laugher, and must laugh when I am paid to laugh, and can stop when I am paid to stop.
Describes tired exhilaration after laughing gas and compares itself to a hired laugher who laughs only when paid.
Unsteered: “I feel very well, thank you.”
